What does a bumper do?

A bumper is the first part of your car to meet an impact in a low-speed hit. The visible part is usually a plastic cover, painted to match the car. Behind the cover, a car can have other parts that absorb the hit and hold the cover in place.

Many newer cars also carry parking sensors, cameras or radar in or behind the bumper. That means a bumper hit can involve more than the paint you see on the surface.

What kinds of bumper damage do you repair?

Bumpers take damage in everyday driving. Parking lots, tight garages, backing into a pole and light rear-end hits are common causes. The damage can show up in a few ways:

Cracks: The plastic cover splits, sometimes along a seam or around a mounting point.

Scratches and scuffs: The paint is scraped, often from contact with a wall or another car.

Loose or sagging covers: The cover comes away from the body, leaving a gap.

Broken pieces: Tabs, mounts or sections of the cover are missing.

Can a cracked or scratched bumper be repaired?

Often, yes. We repair cracked, scratched and loose bumpers and refinish them to match your car. If a bumper is too damaged to repair, we replace it. We tell you which one applies after we see the damage.

Small cracks and surface scratches are good candidates for repair. Large breaks, missing sections and damaged mounting points often point toward replacement.

Should I repair or replace my bumper?

Repair is often the better choice when the cover is mostly intact. Replacement makes sense when the damage goes beyond what a repair can safely fix. The decision depends on the size of the damage, where it is and whether the mounting points are still sound.

We look at the bumper, explain which option fits and give you the estimate before any work begins. You do not have to guess from the outside.

How do you match the paint on a bumper?

A bumper that is repaired or replaced has to match the fenders, doors and hood next to it. Our technicians are PPG Certified, and we match your car’s original color and finish. The new paint is blended so the change is not visible.

Before any car leaves, we check the finish under our hexagonal LED inspection lights. They show color differences, uneven texture and small flaws that are easy to miss in normal light. For more on our paint work, see auto painting.

What if my car has sensors in the bumper?

Many newer cars use cameras, radar and sensors for features such as parking assistance, lane keeping and automatic emergency braking. When a repair moves or replaces a part that holds a sensor, the system may need to be checked afterward.

Does insurance cover bumper repair?

It can, depending on your policy. If an insurance company is involved, we talk with your adjuster and handle the paperwork. Some bumper repairs cost less than a deductible, so a written estimate is useful before you decide whether to file a claim.

Texas law also lets you choose your own repair shop (Texas Insurance Code §1952.302). Your insurer can’t require you to use a specific shop. We work with the major insurance companies, including Progressive, State Farm, Allstate, GEICO, USAA and Gainsco.

What if the other driver was at fault?

If another driver caused the damage, the claim may go through their insurance or yours, depending on the situation. Keep any police report number, claim number and photos you have. Send the photos to us, and we will tell you what the repair involves.

What photos should I send?

Take a few photos from different angles. Add one from a few steps back, so we can see the whole bumper and the panels next to it. Close-ups of cracks, scratches and any loose areas help too.

How much does bumper repair cost?

The cost depends on the type of damage, whether the bumper can be repaired or needs replacement, how much paint work is needed and whether sensors are involved. A scratch and a cracked cover with broken mounts are very different jobs.

How long does bumper repair take?

It depends on the damage, the paint work and parts availability if the bumper needs replacing. If an insurance company is involved, their approval also affects the schedule. We do not promise a number of days before we see the car. We keep you posted until it is ready.

Is it safe to drive with a damaged bumper?

A loose or sagging bumper cover can catch the wind, drag on the road or come off. A cracked cover can get worse over time. If the damage looks serious, or if lights and sensors were hit, it is smart to have it checked soon.

Why can a bumper hit hide other damage?

The bumper cover is a flexible outer shell, and it can spring back after a light hit. The cover may look fine while parts behind it took the impact. Mounts, brackets and sensors can be damaged without any mark on the paint.

That is why we ask for photos from several angles. When the repair starts, we look at what is behind the cover, and we tell you what we find. If the repair plan changes, we talk with your adjuster.

What should I do right after a bumper hit?

A few steps help you and your repair:

Check for safety: If lights are broken or the bumper is hanging loose, have it looked at soon.

Take photos: Photograph the damage from several angles, and the other vehicle if there was one.

Save information: Keep names, phone numbers, insurance details and any report number.

Can I fix a bumper myself?

Small scuffs can look easy to fix at home. But a repair that lasts needs the right plastic repair, careful preparation and a paint match. Home kits often leave a patch that is visible from a few steps away.

What does a bumper estimate include?

The estimate covers what your bumper needs. We look at the type of damage, then decide whether the bumper should be repaired or replaced. The paint work is part of it, because the finished bumper has to match your car. If sensors or cameras are involved, we tell you what that means for the repair.

You get the estimate before any work begins. If insurance is involved, we talk with your adjuster, so everyone works from the same list.

How do I know the repair was done right?

Look at the gaps and the color. The bumper should sit evenly against the fenders, the hood line and the lights. The paint should match from every angle. We check the work under our hexagonal LED inspection lights before delivery. If something is not right after you drive away, our warranty covers our workmanship.

Do bumper repairs come with a warranty?
